“Diet Gordon Gekko”

This is an absolute classic 1980s Cartier Santos ref. 2961 in steel & 18K yellow gold. The Santos is quintessential in the canon of, not just for the brand, but for watches across the entire market. This example has a gorgeous white dial with light spidering, an automatic caliber, blue steeled hands, strong bevels and amazing factory brushing across the case and bracelet. It will fit a 7 inch wrist.

There is not much we can say about the Santos that hasn’t already been said. While the first iteration of this watch was initially invented for the Brazilian pilot Alberto Santos Dumont in 1904, this ref. 2961 dates to the 1980s. Dubbed the Carrée or “square” in French due to its more aggressive case lines, Gordon Gekko famously wore the full gold version in the 1987 movie, Wall Street. While many examples of this watch are quartz powered, this watch has the Cartier Automatic caliber 077 with 42 hours of power reserve and a quick set date.

The Details:

The case and bracelet remain unpolished with factory brushing, bevels strong. The dial is bright, crisp and free of spots. It has light spidering which isn’t unusual for watches from the brand of this age. It shows its age beautifully and is worn honestly. These watches look better with some love anyway. It runs well and keeps great time.
