“Dueling Alpha Swords”

Sometimes the brand is all you need to know about a watch to understand its value. Other times, one has to look around that. This chronograph from what I call a “ghost” brand, Verity, is somewhat different. It’s design is unassuming until you gaze a bit longer into its silver sunburst dial. Firstly, the bold and elongated typeface of the 12 and the 6 indices are striking - evoking pure 60’s cool. Secondly, and almost just as unique are its hands; sharp alpha sword hands with a perfect creamy patina from untouched lume aged to perfection. And not least of all, the tachymeter scale wrapping around the chapter ring in triumphant blue and red.

Moving to its almost untouched 35mm case, setting the watch is a pleasure with its big crown and the chronograph action is buttery thanks to easy to maneuver and tactile square pushers. And we cannot forget the lugs, each of which maintain clear lines, straight and thick, 18mm in length. A perfect ratio for this case size.

Its movement is also of note, sporting the reliable cam based Landeron 248. Many “ghost” brands of the era tended to leverage lesser calibers but Verity cut no corners, employing this stalwart 21 jewel powerhouse that was produced for nearly 40 years, unchanged. More than 3.5 million of these movements were made between 1937-1970 and used by brands Leonidas, Heuer, and Nivada and many more. With 48 hours of power reserve, this caliber is robust and reliable.

Verity had a brief history serving the Japanese market by importing Swiss made watch components, selling under their umbrella from the 30s to the 60s. Watches like this are not only extremely rare, but almost an impossibility to encounter, especially in this, and I cannot stress this enough, MINT condition with hardly any wear. If you’re looking for something explicitly unique and startlingly beautiful with mechanical prowess, stop right here.

The watch is running well keeping accurate time.
